5 tips for transitioning your baby to his own room

At what age should I move my little one to his/her own room?

Moving your baby to his or her own room is a very personal and family-oriented decision. The truth is that there is no specific age and your little one will not give you clear signs that he or she is ready to stop sleeping in your room. Generally, this transition is usually made after six months and, when your baby is still very small, he or she needs to be close to you for safety. If you have made the decision to move your child to another bedroom, whatever his or her age, here are some tips that can help you.

How do I move my baby to his/her bedroom easily and safely?

1. A nap a day

If you have decided that it is time to move your baby to his own room, you can have him take at least one nap a day in the crib in his bedroom . Do this a few days before the transition. This way, your baby will gradually get used to his new environment.

2. Activities in the new room

To make your baby feel like his new bedroom is a safe and familiar place, you can do different activities there several times a day . For example, changing his diapers, dressing him, and playing with him on the floor.

3. Sleeping routine

For three or four nights before transitioning to his or her room, do the bedtime routine there and then bring your baby into your room as usual . This sends the signal that his or her bedroom is a safe place associated with snuggling and getting ready for sleep.

4. The first night

When the day comes for your little one to stop sleeping in your room, put him or her in the same crib he or she usually sleeps in, such as his or her co-sleeper, and then move it to his or her new room . It's important to keep all other conditions the same, such as his or her bedtime routine, white noise machine , and a dark, cool environment.

5. New crib

After three to five nights, have your baby sleep in the crib in his or her bedroom. If he or she wakes up in the night, you can move him or her to the co-sleeping crib you left there. Try to get him or her to sleep more and more each night in his or her new bed . Don't forget to prepare his or her room for safe sleep .

Remember that the decision to move your baby to his or her own bedroom is yours and you should do it only when you and your family want it . Don't make this transition if you don't feel ready and don't let yourself be influenced by other people's opinions. Every family has its own pace.

Also, keep in mind that leaving the parents' room is a big step toward independence for your little one, and they will do so when they are ready. Some babies will find this change easy, and others will have a harder time. This is completely normal, as every child and every family is unique.
