Rutina de sueño en vacaciones: ¿qué hacer cuando los niños comparten la habitación y se acuestan a distinta hora?

Sleep routine on vacation: what to do when children share a room and go to bed at different times?

If your children sleep separately at home, but during the holidays they will have to share a room, you will probably face the challenge of how to respect their sleep routine , despite having different schedules. The good news is that about 80% of children (between 2 and 13 years old) manage to continue sleeping without problems, despite external noises, so it is likely that none of them will wake up with the noises that their brother or sister may make.

Sleep routine on vacation: our best tips if your children have to share a room

  • Prepare the room

You can't stop your little ones from making noise, but you can prepare the room to keep it as quiet as possible. Distribute the spaces so that the cribs or beds are on opposite sides of the room, and put a white noise machine in the central space, to prevent their movements or noises from disturbing their brother or sister's sleep.

  • Communicate with your older child

Older siblings, especially those over 2 ½ years old, can understand most of what you explain about sharing a room with their younger sibling during the holidays. For example, tell them that you will be watching them both on the monitor, remind them not to climb on or put anything in their sibling's crib, etc. Explaining these things helps the older one understand the 'rules' and keep the younger one safe.

  • Put them to bed 30 to 60 minutes apart.

Having bedtimes spaced out has several benefits: it protects each child's individual bedtime routine , and it also allows you to have a special moment with each child. And especially on a trip, they'll surely have plenty to talk about at the end of the day!

  • Use red light

If your older child wants to sleep with the light on, and this may disrupt your child's sleep, we recommend using a red light, which is the least stimulating. Our Mini Rest® white noise machine has a multi-color night light, including red.
