Checklist: What should a baby and child travel first aid kit include?

Traveling with babies and children involves taking a series of precautions to make the most of the destination we visit, and something essential to have in your luggage is a travel first aid kit.

To find out which essential elements we should include, we spoke with Dr. Yassna Kiessling, a pediatrician at the Clínica Universidad de los Andes , and here we share the basic checklist. Take note!

Of course, remember to also include remedies that your children take every day or if they are undergoing a specific treatment, always prescribed by their pediatrician, such as inhalers with their own chamber, vitamins, antibiotics, etc.

Essentials for your baby and child's travel kit

    • Paracetamol or Ibuprofen (for children over 6 months)
    • Physiological serum (for nasal hygiene) + Nasal aspirate
    • Antiallergic
    • Alcohol Gel
    • Gauze
    • Band-Aid Patches
    • Physiological serum (to clean wounds)
    • Band-Aid Patches
    • Sunscreen (for children over 6 months. At least SPF 30)
    • Thermometer
    • Probiotics and hydrating salts (in case of diarrhea)
    • Mosquito repellent (only for children over 2 months old). "It is important not to apply it on the hands, to prevent them from swallowing it when they put their hands in their mouth. And it is better to use lower concentrations when they are outside for less time, and when exposure is greater, it is preferable for repellents with higher concentrations of DEET, which prevents insect bites."
    • Cream for cooking

"It is important to mention that medication dosages should always be discussed with the pediatrician, who will provide the necessary recommendations," explains Dr. Kiessling.

Other VERY important precautions:

  • Do not self-medicate.
  • Check the expiration date of all items in your first aid kit.
  • If you travel abroad, make sure your children have their vaccinations up to date, and always travel with health insurance.
