During pregnancy and the first months of motherhood, many women focus on choosing the breast pump that best suits their needs, but very few do so considering the one that best fits their nipple. Yes! Because just like a bra, breast pump shields have different cups (sizes) and finding the right size for each breast is key to successful extractions without discomfort or pain.
To understand why it is so important to choose this cup correctly, how to measure the nipple and how to position and care for the breast pump funnel, we spoke with Janeth Rivera ( @apoyando_a_mama ), a lactation and complementary feeding consultant.

Why is it important to choose the right breast pump cup and how does it affect the success of breast pumping?
It is important to choose the correct pump cup, as this way we can have efficient extractions without damaging the nipples or the skin. If a cup is too big or too small, a mother may experience pain and injuries such as broken and cracked nipples. And if she has pain, the extractions (volume of milk extracted) may be less.
How to choose the right cup?
It is important to consider that not all breast pumps have different cup sizes and that when making a purchase you should not do so based on the size of your nipple. The cups (or funnels) are usually sold separately and in those brands that do not have them, you can use other ones that adapt well.
The correct technique for measuring the nipple
Only the diameter of the nipple should be measured (regardless of the type of nipple you have), without the areola, and the measurement should be done on each nipple.
The best time to measure yourself
- If you are pregnant: in the 3rd trimester, and add 2 mm to the result.
- If you are breastfeeding: immediately after breastfeeding.
- If you are just extracting: immediately after an extraction.
The correct way to use the funnel
The breast shield should be centered on the nipple, without pressing on the breast when pumping. After pumping, it should be washed with soap and allowed to dry.
Will a cup be the same throughout breastfeeding or can it vary over time?
No. Over time, the size and shape of the nipples change, especially in mothers who pump frequently.
